Craptastic weekend update!

I've been up since 5am, as I have been every morning for the past week. It's getting to be a bit annoying, especially as I'd planned to sleep in. However, it was nice to notice that for the first time this year, the apartment had that distinct autumn chill to it. I never realize how much I miss cold weather until it returns. I turned off the air conditioner and fans, put on my ratty "craaazy writer" sweater (it's really quite fugly, with a detachable "fur" collar that I'm pretty sure was made from the hides of rats), brewed a ginormous pot of coffee (from beans I carted home from Belgium), and worked for a couple of hours on the outline of a novel I think I'll write next year, after this year's project is completely finished and in submission. I'm reluctant to say what it's about, only because I'm afraid people will laugh - yes, it's fantasy, and yes, there are dragons. Oh, and worse yet: it's going to be a series, probably a quartet. I know, I know... it couldn't be more clichéd, even if I threw in some pretty-boy elves and a sweating dwarf or two. Well, I'll show it to relby tomorrow at our quarterly "drink'n'bitch" session - if after reading it he vomits up his drink and claws his eyeballs out, then I'll know I should probably burn it. Wait, no: that'll mean it'll be a bestseller, and he's just JEALOUS. Go me!

In other news, I think it's quite amusing that Nancy Kress - the woman who at Clarion 06 expounded on the evils of blogging and the intarwebz as a distraction from writing (and from what I hear, she laid into it at the 07 workshop as well) - now has a blog. I'm not saying anything more.

::hee hee::

And last: as of today, according to The Eowyn Challenge, I've walked from Hobbiton to Rivendell. That's 458 miles since I started logging them back in May. I started this as a lark, to see if I could actually finish at least one of the sections they've listed - I had no idea I'd finish. Plus, I'm currently about 20 pounds lighter than I began (ok, I gained a few pounds back after coming home from Europe, lol). I usually don't blog at length about my weight, but I felt this deserved mentioning, since I've been working my ass off, quite literally, to keep the weight off permanently this time around. Time to celebrate with cheesecake! No, scratch that. Back to the gym, and baby carrots for everyone!

Marine Autumn

I owe you marine autumn
With dankness at its roots
and fog like a grape
and the graceful sun of the country;
and the silent space
in which sorrows lose themselves
and only the bright crown
of joy comes to the surface.

--Pablo Neruda.
