A new holiday for a new age

April 23rd has great significance in history. For one, it's the anniversary of the birth and death of William Shakespeare. I also found out that it's Diada de Sant Jordi - a holiday in which one gives a book and a rose to loved ones.

However, all that is about to change. Starting this year, April 23 will forever be known as:

This coming Monday the 23, every writer is urged to post free, professional-level fiction on the internet. The idea is courtesy of Jo Walton, as a reaction to Howard V. Hendrix' rant against "web scabs" who are supposedly jeopardizing the publishing industry and the livelihoods of traditional writers by posting their work online for free. John Scalzi also weighs in with his approval of this new holiday, along with a spiffy graphic which I yoinked for this post.

I have to think about what I could post for this - the only thing I have is the the first half of the final draft of my currently trunked YA dark fantasy. Yes, this is the same novel I'm going to be de-trunking and rewriting later this year. As it stands now, the current version is a giant craptacular tangle of too many plot threads, too many characters and too much bullshit fancypants world building - so what I post isn't going to look anything like the new version. I might just put it up over at the_numinous_1, as "Untitled Generic YA Dark Fantasy Novel #1" in a series of unlocked posts (because it's an out-of-date abandoned draft, there's no need to "protect" it - personally I think it's y'all that need protection from my crappy first novel attempt, lol).

Is it professional-quality writing, though? Well, er… one could rightly surmise that if it's been trunked, then it's clearly not pro-level work. I'd agree with that. However, there are some good bits - it's the few good bits that I plan on holding onto for the new version, while I jettison the rest. So maybe it'll be of some interest to a few people. I suppose the first couple of chapters will be good for a laugh or two. I'm not going to ask if you're all interested, though. I know the polite but horrified silence will crush me. ;) I'll just let you know when I post them.

Marine Autumn

I owe you marine autumn
With dankness at its roots
and fog like a grape
and the graceful sun of the country;
and the silent space
in which sorrows lose themselves
and only the bright crown
of joy comes to the surface.

--Pablo Neruda.
