The ChiZine Review

So. I’m getting more emails about this, and people are starting to post about it in various places, and I wanted to ignore it, but it’s become apparent that I can’t. I’m pointing you to this post by Sandra McDonald, because I don’t want to link to the actual review. The comments should also be read.

I want to add that I didn’t ask for the review to be canceled because, despite my disappointment over the sexual tone of the piece, I truly felt it wasn’t my right as the author to ask that the review be changed – a review is an opinion, and he gave his opinion. I saw the piece before it ran, and told the reviewer I felt readers might react strongly (i.e. negatively) to portions of it – he did remove a sentence which described the book as an actual physical extension of my body, but that’s it. Language aside, it’s an extremely positive review, albeit one I’ve decided I can’t use to promote the book, because I feel it misrepresents both the nature of the stories in the collection and me as a writer. But as someone at ChiZine must have read it before posting it to the site, I can only believe that they felt the language and tone of the review were appropriate.

In hindsight? I probably should have told my newbie nerves to shove it, damn “professionalism”, and insist that the review be canceled, even if it meant never being reviewed at ChiZine again. But hindsight – well, you know the saying.

Edited to add: The review has since been rewritten and reposted, and no longer exists in the same form as the original.

Marine Autumn

I owe you marine autumn
With dankness at its roots
and fog like a grape
and the graceful sun of the country;
and the silent space
in which sorrows lose themselves
and only the bright crown
of joy comes to the surface.

--Pablo Neruda.
