Oh, it's THAT day again...

Even though I went to the supermarket extra early this morning, it was still crowded beyond belief with men and women cramming their carts full of every conceivable Super Bowl snack-related food and beverage possible. The lines were hellishly long, and of course everything slowed to a halt whenever someone decided in the middle of their check-out that they had to go back into the store and search for that last bag of CHEEZY XTREEM 2 TEH MAX Dorito's or twenty bags of ice. The guy in front of me did the same thing, freaking out and running off just before the clerk hit total on the register. Everyone mumbled and made frowny faces at him, but there wasn't much we could do about it.

We waited....

And then he returned. What had he forgotten? Well, in one giant sweating hand, this mountain of a man held the strings to two Mylar football-shaped balloons with NY GIANTS stamped in sparkling, glittery letters on them. And he had a great big smile on his face like he was a kid again. He was so happy, I though he was gonna cry.

We all forgave him.

Marine Autumn

I owe you marine autumn
With dankness at its roots
and fog like a grape
and the graceful sun of the country;
and the silent space
in which sorrows lose themselves
and only the bright crown
of joy comes to the surface.

--Pablo Neruda.
